Forecasting and monitoring the political landscape

Whether you’re a legislative staffer who needs to know whether a press conference means your bill is doomed or an advocate who is wondering what might be coming in the next legislative session, knowing what the present means for the future is a fundamental skill for anyone in the political ecosystem.

We teach workshops (online or in person) providing both a high-level overview and practical techniques to better anticipate what is likely and unlikely in your world. These workshops have been taught at the Pentagon, UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and universities. You can get in touch to book a workshop or learn more about it, or take the online course version at https://twolanterns.co/academy.

Scenario Planning

The world is highly uncertain now. Our assumptions about what the world will be like in 5 years - or even 5 months - are shaky to the point of useless.

Luckily, scenario planning has been found to help in these situations. Based on the work of Shell, RAND, and the Intelligence Community, this approach encourages a blend of internal and external knowledge to stress-test plans and spark conversations within teams.

Scenarios can be built for industries, countries, or even the global order, from 2024 to 2050. Click the image to learn more.

Scenario strategy workshops & simulations

Militaries and business often use simulations or wargames to test strategies, build insights, and predict what might happen in a complex and uncertain situation.

Matrix games are a tool to bring apply this approach quickly, without the need of months of preparation. They are therefore perfect for the current environment, when a traditional wargame may be obsolete by the time it's played.

Matrix games can be deployed within a week of commission and take 3-5 hours to run. They are best suited to groups of 4-20 and can help build resiliency across all levels of an organization.

Thought Leadership Reports

According to a 2021 IBM 2021 IBM survey, business executives spend two hours per week on thought leadership content - original research that helps push new ideas into the public arena. Crafting valuable thought leadership that captures your audience’s attention requires more than just drafting a blog post or uploading a panel discussion. It’s a process that balances diving deep into new directions while also remaining comprehensible enough for a non-specialist audience. It’s a technique that we’re specialized in.

Our thought leadership reports are designed to be both accurate and digestible. They employ data visualization, graphical elements, and concise writing to make a report a busy executive or elected can actually read. We can work with you to design the best possible research and can partner with a major media or public relations firm to promote the final result. Get in touch and we can start working on a program to elevate your brand in your market.

Understanding Twitter and how to get the most out of it

Twitter is the most used social media app for political conversations. From our research, there are three main ways that Twitter is used by elected officials.

  1. As a newswire

  2. To get their message out

  3. A mechanism for community input

But there are problems with each. As a newswire, it isn’t perfectly representative, so you may be receiving a skewed view of the world. As a messaging platform, it can be hard to know what to respond to. As a channel for constituents, it can be hard to sift through tweets to detect trends.

We offer a 360º review of your Twitter profile and network to help you know more about your personal place in the app. It’s entirely with public information, so there’s no need for us to access your private credentials, and can be completed within a few days. It will:

  • Show you where you rank among your colleagues according to:

    • Total followers

    • Tweets per day

    • RT + Fav per tweet

    • Time of day for tweets

  • Summarize of your mentions and compare these stats to 5 of your colleagues by:

    • Top words

    • Average sentiment

    • Most prolific mentioners

    • Estimated bot percentage

  • Assess your informational ecosystem:

    • Who are the people you're following following themselves? (This shows you where their info may be coming from)

    • Who are your followers following? (This can help with situating yourself and how you're perceived by your followers)

    • Who are your mentioners following? (The most recent 100 mentions)
